Joe Van der Katt and the Great Picket Fence
By Peter J. Welling In this delightful children’s book, in the town of Litterbox in New York’s Catskill Mountains, J. Paul Kitty and the other fat cats have all the money and power until the poor cats get organized and demand fair pay and better working conditions. The employees at Cat’s Cradle Company eventually triumph when, led by fellow cats Joe Wobbly and Gompers, they build a picket fence for the owner but don’t make a gate. At the end, of course, the worker cats go to celebrate at Debs’ Diner over Cheesy Mouseburger Helper with Hairballs. Because of the victory the story recounts, cats celebrate Lay-Purr Day all year long. It should be noted that J. Paul Kitty also owns wildcat oil wells and the Cattanooga choo-choo. The book is filled with fun puns and illustrations with very funny – and sometimes hidden – gags. And of all things, because the cats live in a Dutch settlement, there are a number of words in Dutch (with a glossary). 32 pages hardcover
